Why Rivian Repairs Take Months, and the One Thing to Demand Before You Drop Off
The labor takes weeks. The parts take seasons. Knowing which is which changes what you do next.
Talk to a Rivian owner who has been through a collision repair and the complaint is rarely about the quality of the work. It’s about the calendar — and the calendar is about parts.

The labor takes weeks. The parts delay takes months. If you own an R1T or R1S in Ventura County, this is why — and this is the one thing to insist on before you hand over the keys.
What causes the Rivian collision repair parts delay
Rivian parts come through one channel. Autobody News, reporting on the certified collision program, put it in one sentence:
“Currently, only certified collision centers have access to Rivian parts.”
That solves one problem and creates another. Every certified shop in the country is drawing from the same supply, and when a part goes on backorder, it goes on backorder for everyone at once.
The same report noted that “Almost every repair on a Rivian EV will require calibration,” which adds a step at the end of the job. But calibration is measured in days. Parts are measured in seasons.

How long does a Rivian repair take? Two owners, one calendar
A truck in this state is not being repaired. It is being stored — on your rental days.
One owner posted a quick note on Rivian body repairs after their truck went in. The labor was done in two weeks. The truck then sat for more than 30 days waiting on parts, and the rental coverage ran out while it sat.
Another owner documented an R1S collision repair ordeal. The certified shop had 12 other Rivians waiting, which is a respectable showroom except that nothing in it is for sale, and the owner was paying out of pocket for a rental.

January to July is half a year, and most of it was spent waiting for one door that was in a queue with every other door in the country.
The one thing to demand before you drop off
The owner from the first thread gave the advice this whole post exists to repeat:

Say your R1S gets clipped in the parking lot at Ventura Harbor and the damage is a door and a quarter panel, and the truck still drives fine. It should stay in your driveway until the shop has physically received every part on the estimate. Ordered does not count, and neither does “in transit.” Received and checked against the parts list counts.
Rental coverage runs on a clock that starts when the truck goes in, and backorders do not care about your policy limits. A Rivian sitting in a shop bay with no parts is being stored on your rental days, not repaired.

“Are all the parts in the building?”
A good shop will answer honestly. A shop that gets vague has just told you something useful.

Why that rule is harder to follow from Ventura County
Here is the part nobody tells you: being local does not move you up the parts queue. The backorder is national. A shop in Oxnard and a shop in Van Nuys are waiting on the same door.
What your location does change is where your truck spends those months, and how easy the drop-off is when the parts finally land.
Rivian runs no facility in Ventura County — the nearest company locations are in Van Nuys and Burbank, roughly 50 and 60 miles from Oxnard. If the certified shop you choose is over the Conejo Grade, the drop-off rule gets expensive to follow. “The door arrived, can you come in Tuesday” means a 50-mile trip at short notice, then another one to collect the truck, plus a rental to get home in between.
If the shop is in the county, the same phone call means a twenty-minute drive. That is the practical argument for keeping the work local: not a faster part, but a cheaper wait.

The aim is one continuous block of work — not two weeks of repair followed by a month of storage.

Once the estimate is approved, the parts get ordered, and the truck stays with you if it can. When the parts land, we check them against the order, and only then do we schedule the drop-off.
It is the opposite of what most people do, which is drop the truck off the day after the accident because it feels like progress.

What to do while you wait
Read your rental coverage limit today, before you need it. It is written in days or in dollars, and both run out. The owner in the second thread was paying for a rental out of pocket by the end. That is a policy question, and it is better asked in advance than discovered in month four.

Frequently asked questions
When will my backordered Rivian part arrive?
Usually nobody can say, and be wary of a shop that promises a date. Backorder means Rivian does not have it yet. The shop can tell you what it has been told, and it should tell you the moment that changes.
Should I drop my Rivian off right away to get in line?
Only if it is unsafe to drive. Otherwise you are moving the wait from your driveway to the shop’s lot, and starting your rental clock early to do it.
Does a Rivian certified shop get parts faster?
A certified shop gets parts. Rivian does not supply non-certified shops, so at a non-certified shop the question is whether the parts arrive at all — not how fast.
Does using a local shop shorten the wait?
No. The backorder queue is national, so a shop in Oxnard waits exactly as long as a shop in Los Angeles. What a local shop changes is the cost of the wait: shorter trips for drop-off and collection, and fewer rental days spent driving back and forth.
